Why is my Pac Choi (Bokchoy) bolting?

Hi everyone, long time no talk! My garden is growing strong this year, especially my luscious spaghetti squash and cucumbers – for some reason they are big, bulky and doing great!

What is NOT doing great is my pac choi (bokchoy). This has actually happened for the last two seasons but I have not been able to figure out a cure. The pac choi I’m using is dwarf white stemmed pac choi from West Coast Seeds.

I water consistently, and I do get edible leaves but the stems are very skinny so as soon as they bolt, I pick the leaves and then the plant seems to be done – so I pull it out.

Any suggestions for me? Do you grow any Asian vegetables such as pac choi? I have been growing more and more Asian veggies(my fiance is Chinese!) and I totally love them – they taste delicious and are easy to use in my cooking. I can’t wait to hear from you guys!

Garden update: spaghetti squash

Sooooo if you know me, you know that I LOVE SPAGHETTI SQUASH. I adore it because it tricks my mind into thinking I’m eating some delicious carb filled pasta, and oh boy…pasta is my all time fave.

So this summer I decided to give spaghetti squash a try in the garden. I had never grown it before but I thought why not! I planted 4 seeds and they all germinated! They have been growing steadily for weeks now and look what’s happening!!! I think those are baby squashes!

I am a bit worried that they aren’t growing fast enough since it’s almost September and then the temperature will start dropping down.

What is your experience growing squash? How fast do these little squashies grow? And should I be fertilizing or anything? 🌱

Fertilizing the garden – questions!

OK, it’s time for another garden post. In my last post I asked for tips on what I could improve upon in my garden and almost ALL of you suggested FERTILIZING. Now I can assure you there are about 70 million websites telling me how to fertilize, but they all seem different and some are pretty confusing. IDEALLY I would love to keep my fertilizing natural, but is this possible?

When I began prepping my soil this season I added 3 bags of sheep manure and 1 bag of peat soil to my existing soil with the hope that this would help. In the past I’ve ground egg shells, cut banana peels up, and tossed coffee grinds into my soil but it seems that this is not enough. My partner went out and bought me a bottle of this:I applied it to my tomatoes a few weeks back when the plant began growing fruit but it seems to be just sitting on the top of the soil. Question for all my lovely gardener blog buddies: how do you fertilize, what do you use and how often do you do it?

Honestly when I started my garden I was focused on growing food, eating food, and growing some more. I had never really considered the ‘complicated’ parts of it such as soil pH, fertilizing and what to do when nothing is growing. Well I know I’m in good hands as you people are truly incredible with your feedback, tips and advice 🙂 I can honestly say it is a joy logging onto WordPress to see how your gardens are doing. Summer garden update

Hi all! I have been reading your blogs a lot, and am constantly amazed by your gardens! I want to learn from you!🌻

My garden got off to a slow start what with the wet cold May & June. By now I expected much more ssuccess from my plamts since last year at this time I was harvesting and replanting. But nope😢 my garden is sad, small, wilting and I’m confused about what’s going on. Here are the photos:

As you can see on the left side my tomatoes and peas are doing fine but the right side is where I planted spinach, bokchoy, radishes, swiss chard, carrots, flowers and they are tiny tiny.

I’m wondering if it’s my soil as I grew tomatoes(LOTS of them) last year in the soil. I added 3 bags of fresh good soil in though so I just don’t know what’s happening. If my soil IS a goner, what can I do to help it? Please don’t tell me I have to remove it all. Because that’s not happening. Help!

The garden season

Ahh it feels good to be back! How are YOU?! I’m eager to hear how all my blog buddies are doing. 

This year has been a cold one so I’m just beginning to plant seeds now! Unbelievable! This week I will be planting: carrots, radishes, beets, bokchoy, spinach, wild flowers, potatoes and spaghetti squash.

Spaghetti squash is a new one to me…I’ve never grown a squash and I’m wondering if anyone can help me out. I hear I need to make a mound of sorts?

Anyway I’ll be posting photos in the coming days. Now I want to hear all about what YOU are growing! Do share xox 🌱🌱🌞

A meal from the garden

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Today I made spot prawns with bokchoy and peas from my garden. OK the prawns were from the ocean but you know, the vegetable part was grown by me;)

A few of you have asked me how to use bokchoy (aka: pac choi) so I’m here to tell you!

In this case my bokchoy bolted so I haven’t been eating the stem as its very fibreous, better off for a nice animal with large teeth. Instead I’ve been peeling the leaves off and frying them.

It’s a lot like spinach in that it shrinks down and goes a bit limp when you heat it. I added some water and soy sauce and fried them up for about 5 minutes. I added my lovely snow peas in at the end.

I’m generally NOT the type of person to take photos of my food but I don’t buy expensive seafood everyday, and this was my first pea harvest…so I had to!

Garden update!

It’s time for a garden update! I was away for the weekend and came home to quite the treat…radishes!!! These radishes are the first harvest of the year, besides the onion some creature dug up.

I’ve also taken photos of my other veggies to show you all how they’re coming along.

First, the tomatoes are about the same size, likely due to lack of heat…boo, hopefully they pick up soon. Come to us, sunshine! 🍅🍅

Below you can see our onions are very floppy…the green stems resemble fainting goats. Does anyone know if this is a normal thing for growing onions to do?

The bokchoy is tall, but thin. I assume the stems are on the cusp of bulking up. Here’s hoping! Unfortunately as you can see something is eating the bokchoy leaves (damn you creatures, damn you!). There’s many wood bugs roaming around…perhaps they are the culprits?

Carrots, oh yes carrots! They’re doing well, looking more like carrots everyday. They are about 4 inches tall. All I want is one purple carrot ☺

Not pictured are my beautiful and lively pea plants which are about 5 feet tall.
